Ugly's name does not seem to fit him. Sure, he's lanky, and his pale blue right eye doesn't match his yellow left, but he doesn't look bad or even terribly out of the ordinary. At least, not while he has his magic in use...
At all times when conscious of the presence of other ponies (though obviously not while asleep and generally not while in the Everfree Forest), Ugly seems to be using magic. He usually looks very tired due to this, and the effect is visible in a soft red glow around his horn.

Personality: Generally quiet and aloof, Ugly Bristle is clearly not used to socializing much. One can only imagine he got a lot of teasing as a foal with a rotten name like that. He can be colossally awkward and bizarre in his socialization, made worse due to his rather stormy temper. However Ugly Bristle has a soft spot for animals, all things beautiful, and, as his cutie mark would suggest, listening to and playing music. He is known to flee from foals, being quite uneasy around young ones. Despite his quietness, Ugly Bristle does actively seek out socialization -- even if he ends up quietly sneaking off a good half of the time, ears pinned.

Sample Post: Ugly Bristle always knew where to find a quiet spot. Why, he'd found a place a short trot out of the Everfree Forest, in Ponyville, where the animals were not wild, but would gladly let him feed them and talk to them. More importantly, they wouldn't try to bite him in half. But wouldn't you know it? The moment a pony finds a quiet meadow, suddenly a family's decided this is a perfect place to have a picnic! Well, it looked like a family. Ugly wasn't going to stick around to find out. Quickly he was gone over the hill, towards Ponyville proper.

His horn flared red, then settled to a soft glow. He slowed his pace, before he alarmed somepony or bowled them over. He knew the route by now. Avoid the schoolhouse, first off -- then avoid the bakery. He'd seen a pink filly hanging around there once, bouncing all around, yelling, and generally convincing him that he did not want to meet her, even from a distance. But he did need food. The market. The uneasy rumblings in his head were drowned out by talking. Ugly's ears pinned, but he looked around to see what there was to be had.
